Algebra II Honors Blog #1

Hey guys so I know this is definitely confusing going to all of these different sites but trust me this one is SOOO much better.

The first thing that you will have to do once you get to this page is to select the follow button to the right

This will allow you to follow the blog and comment on anything that is posted under the heading Algebra II Honors. Thanks guys

For this blog I want you all to comment on this series of videos from the discovery channel on time travel

You should include:

1.)     What you thought of the videos (good, bad, believable, improbable etc)

2.)     Find an example (other than the one in the video) of a possible paradox that might ever happen post the link in your comment

3.)     Try and figure out (by listening to the videos and other research) Why time travel may or may not be possible and give your answer

  1. After watching these movie clips I find myself hoping that time travel will someday be possible. I think that worm hole travel may be the only way of getting from one planet to another, if we find how to do it. I say that because with the information scientists have now the speed of light is like a natural speed limit to all things. This means that even if we could reach the speed of light, which is 299,792,458 miles per second, it would be impossible to go faster. All other galaxies are many light years (The distance light can travel in one year) away. Some people think time and space travel are impossible but there are just as many that believe in them, so I see no reason to deem it a myth.
A large problem with the idea of time travel is the dilemma of paradoxes such as the “Grandfather Paradox.” Another example of a paradox is the “Liar paradox” which can be experienced on any day. There is more information on this website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liar_paradox. A good example of a paradox concerning time travel can be found on this site http://www.pbs.org/wnet/hawking/mysteries/html/kaku1-1.html. The paradox being “If a person or idea has no past where does it come from?”
According to Einstein and numerous other scientists, in theory time and space travel should be possible. It seems as though most theories of time and space travel revolve around black holes. Steven Hawking believes that the extreme denseness and gravitational pull of the black holes will slow down time itself. A scientist from New Zealand used Einstein's equations figured that black holes when created actually condense into a donut like shape that acts as a sort of looking glass from Alice in Wonderland. This looking glass can let objects through into other times and places with out trapping them. Yes, I know that I am over simplifying things, but as long as the theory seems plausible than I will not strike it down.

  2. I think that the idea of this video is not very beleivable because creating a portal that takes you back in time is some fantasy that you would see in a movie.
A paradox of time travel can be seen on this link
    http://www.friesian.com/paradox.htm
The article tell of a story by Robert Heinlein called "By HIs Bootstraps". It talks about how the story portrays time travel as impossible because it simply does not exist among real things.
Overall, i do not beleive time travel is possible because the video doesn't provide me with much information about these "wormholes" that are supposed to take you back in time. In my opinion, Time travel is just some movie fantasy.

  3. After watching Stephen Hawking’s Universe: Wormhole Voyages I thought that this was a very good idea. At first I figured that this would be improbable to make a Wormhole in outer space and to travel through time. But then after thinking about the scientific field and how much it advances I had no doubt that this could work. I don’t know about the giant wormhole, but definitely the concept of time travel will happen someday.
An example I found was on http://www.horology-stuff.com/time/travel/paradox.html, it basically sums up time travel. Something interesting about time travel is called The Grandfather Paradox. Which means that if I invent a time machine and go back in time and kill my grandfather when he was a boy. Then the result of that is one of my parents not being born therefore I wouldn’t be born. So everything would be screwed up if something like that would happen.
Reading an interview by Stephen Hawking says that time travel could be possible. Hawking says that time travel should also be in cards because of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, which allows for potential to wrap space – time so much that a traveler could leave earth in a rocket and return home before he or she ever departed. So with in mind I believe that space travel is one day possible. If Albert Einstein came up with a theory way back in time with little to no technology, there is no doubt that with the scientific tools that we will travel into space.

  4. When I first saw that we were going to respond to a video about time travel, I thought that I would write it was improbable. After watching the video, my initial reaction was as I thought before. However, after watching it a few more times and thinking about it, I figured that science is always surprising us, and therefore time travel could be possible someday.
An example I found was http://www.livescience.com/1339-travel-time-scientists.html. This article at first stated that time travel was a fantasy, but then it listed a few ways as to how someone could possible time travel. One of these was a way of travelling into the future that deals with the fourth dimension. An expert on string theory, Brian Greene, summed it up, "Build a spaceship. Go near the speed of light for a length of time—that I could calculate. Come back to Earth, and when you step out of your ship you will have aged perhaps one year while the Earth would have aged one million years. You would have traveled to Earth’s future."
By watching the video and reading this article, I believe that time travel may be possible. However, I only think that it would someday be possible to travel into the future, not into the past. I think this because it has been theorized that if one person travelled into the past, and prevented one thing from happening, the whole world history could be changed. I just don't find this probable. Also, in the article I read, it stated that travelling into the future is not in any way possible by the laws of physics.

  5. I think that the videos were very good because i find all this extremely interesting. It may have to do with the fact that my favorite show is doctor who and one of my favorite movies is back to the future and i just so happen to have a shirt with both of the time machines from those on it. I think that the concept of time travel is believable, especially since he had evidence to back it up.

I found several paradoxes at http://brainden.com/paradoxes.htm. I liked the one "I always lie" because it is very simple, but it is still immensely complicated because if the statement is true, then that means that it is a lie, which would mean that it is true, and so on, so it always contradicts itself.

Time travel probably will not be possible in the near future, but i think that eventually, we will be able to build a portal to the fourth dimension or build a worm hole or something like that eventually.

  6. The video talked about subjects that are hard to believe. Though it is possible that time travel could be controlled in the distant future. The whole idea about controlling black holes and wormholes is hard to get one’s mind around though. It might I believe cause more problems between the different nations around the world and fighting in war might be worse, more civilians killed.
Time travel may not be possible because one you would have to traveling at the speed of light, which would be a hard speed to reach. Second, if wormholes were used scientist would first need to know how to create a wormhole and then control it. How would scientist even know if a time traveling experiment worked? People might not be able to get back, communication might fail and many other possibilities could happen. If scientist used black holes, is there the fact many science classes teach you that you are pretty much destroyed by a black hole? Those are reasons why time travel may be to hard for humans to discover or it will take immense time to discover how.

Here is my link about another paradox:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2sp-clMk8s
Here is the title just in case the link messes up:
    Time Travel with Proof
It is about how a man goes through his sink cuburd further and further until he reaches somewhere else and he mets his future self. He takes a video of it with his phone too, which is why some believe him. I found it very intreasting.

  7. 1.) I thought the video was kind of interesting, but I don't really believe it's possible any time soon, because even today, most of what we know about chemistry and physics is arbitary (especially quantum physics). Past the basics, a lot of physics is theory because it can't really be tested or seen in our universe, so I don't think we'll have the means to do something like this.

2.)while on the subject of quantum physics and mechanics, a paradox commonly used to explain the idea of quantum computing is Schrödinger's cat. In this paradox, a cat is placed in a closed box and gassed. The question: is the cat dead or alive? The paradox is, basically, that until the box is opened, the cat exists as a living object, and as a dead one at the same time. For more detailed information: http://www.mtnmath.com/faq/meas-qm-3.html

3.)Anyways, as I stated above, I think time travel will remain something that is theoretically possible, but which we lack the means to use. I don't really understand much, but appearantly you'd need either a state of exotic matter (whatever that is!), and it doesn't sound like something that's easy to come by and manipulate (if it exists). Also, you wouldn't be able to go back any farther than before the wormhole was created, right (because you have to come out the other end, and it's impossible to come out an end that doesn't exist).

  8. 1. I think the video was good and really interesting, but it didn't seem realistic at all. It even starts out by sayin something like, "I'm not saying this can happen, but if it could..."

    2. A really good example of a paradox that I found online was: www.horology-stuff.com/time/travel/paradox.html

    3. I really don't think time travel can happen. However, the most well known scientists seem to think it can. Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein have several ideas and theories. The only thing is, when Albert Einstein thought those things, we knew even less than we did now about time travel and outerspace. We still hardly do know anything compared to what's out there to know. In addition, after learning about something called the "Grandfather Clause", I am even more skeptical about it. It basically says that if you go back and time and kill your grandfather, then you will never be born because he won't have kids and so on. Of course, if you never were born, you never could go back in the first place to kill your grandfather. It doesn't make any sense. Maybe if we were to time travel, we just couldn't change the past, sort of like Lost.

  9. The thought of time travel is a thought that is both exciting, and something that I am a bit skeptical about. While Hawking may have said that the wormholes could possibly put a ship back in time, there just isn't enough evidence to prove such a claim, and there is no way of testing it unless a crew finds a wormhole and is willing to be the guinea pig in this time travel experiment. The scientists would have to control the black holes or wormholes and the ship would have to travel at the speed of light, a speed that is definitely hard to reach. The technology needed to pull off or let alone try a stunt like this, is in the distant future. To condone sending in a ship for a possible suicide mission is something that will have to be decided on in the future if scientists ever attempt to time travel.

Here is my link from a related video that touches on another paradox.

  10. In my personal opinion, I believed these videos attempted to prove time travel was remotely an option, but at the same time, state that there is little to no chance this could ever happen. The fact that the narrator uses words such as "Could...", "If we do this.....then maybe...." and, "Possibly". I'd rationally assume that time travel has always been something scientists have dreamed about and with so many ideas and theories, they believe that it might actually be possible in the future. Something these men and women are overlooking is the reality of what is happening on Earth at the moment. An energy crisis, undeveloped (and developed) countries going into rebellion, nuclear weapons at the hands of a few world leaders. These issues cannot be burdened with the production of a giant spaceship that MAY be able to achieve the speed of light and MAY provide for possible colonization of other planets. Those are my own personal reasons why I believe these videos may have theoretical truth, but that's certainly all they'll ever have, (At least in my lifetime).
An interesting and funny 'paradox', which may or may not be considered a paradox, I found is called the Crocodile Dilemma. Of course it will not happen specifically to anyone but it states that, "If a crocodile steals a child and promises it's return if the father can correctly guess what the crocodile will do, how would the crocodile respond in the case that the father guesses that the child will not be returned?" This paradox really explains the fact that language can only explain so much.
    - - - - http://mathworld.wolfram.com/CrocodilesDilemma.html - - - -
In my opinion, resources are the largest opponent of the reality of time travel. All of these scientists, including Stephen Hawking have theories and ideas about time travel and the only thing stopping them from finding out whether they would work or not is material. Shown in the series of videos was a giant spacecraft, theoretically, capable of achieving the speed of light. No one has been able to prove anything such as this idea right or wrong because it most likely can never be done. Until we, as a planet, begin to learn about new sources of clean, efficient, and abundant energy, then and only then can we begin to implement these grand ideas and learn whether or not time travel is possible.

  11. 1. I didn't think the concept in the video was very believable. i'm skeptical to believe that it's actually possible for someone to time travel. Also the video didn't give a lot of information to support what they were saying, they were just throwing ideas out.

    2. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_time_paradox
In this response it explains one of the most famous paradoxes: the grandfather paradox. The situation is that you go back in time and kill your grandfather before your father is born meaning he and you would never be born so you don't actually exist, but in reality, if you were never born, you would have never killed your grandfather....

    3. I don't think time travel is possible because the concept of going through a "wormhole" and being in a different time is so unbelievable. Many scientist believe that it's either possible or impossible, but at this point, there has been no time traveling and with the extent of our technology now, chances aren't too good. I'll remain skeptical until there is proof.

  12. I thought this video was interesting but i don't think it is believable because of the time travel piece of it i don't believe would be able to happen. It might sound like a good idea, but i don't think it could ever happen.

http://www.horology-stuff.com/time/travel/paradox.html this is a link that talks about the grandfather paradox and some resolutions and other things about paradoxes.

I don't believe that time travel will be in the near future, or in the future at all. It is hard to understand because we don't know how these are created or how they could bring one to the past and be able to travel back in time. Maybe if we made one now and then one in the far future, they could come back to our time.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1. I thought the concept of a wormhole was interesting but very improbable. I don't believe something such as a wormhole is possible unless man made. For it to be man made we are not close to accomplishing such a feat. Theoretically it is a possibility, but a little far fetched. Time travel I also still regard as a feat that is more of a science fiction joke then it is a possibility.

    2. Although traveling forward in time doesn't involve any ind of paradox it is proven to be possible. It is proven if you are flying over long distances you lose one billionth of a second. If you spread this out to stars going at light speed you could theoretically begone for ten earth years and come back only one year older. Another paradox could possibly be a black hole. This could be the equivalent of a wormhole transporting or even causing one to travel through time.

    3. As I explained in problem number two traveling forward is theoretically possible. Traveling backwards in time would be more difficult. If the whole universe is rotating it is possible to travel in a closed loop in space and come back before one leaves. This is theoretically possible if the universe is constantly rotating. With our current means of space travel there is no possible way to prove something as complex as time travel.

  14. 1. I believe the video was impossible. Wormholes are not proven to exist. Along with there is no man made one out there. Also out technologies are far from making one. Time travel is also impossible or at least you cant prove it is possible.
    2. Mad scientist paradox. http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/stephen-hawkings-universe-mad-scientist-paradox.html#mkcpgn=snag1 The idea states that if a scientist creates a wormhole then shoots himself through the wormhole then what happens
to the scientist who shot himself. Also if the scientist shoots himself his body is already dead therefore he can't go into the past and shoot himself.
    3. I believe time travel is not possible. I believe this because no such wormholes exist to do so. Along with time travel is just a fantasy subject. I believe that even if it is possible to travel back in time then humans won't be able to figure it out.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I Think the ides of time warp are impossible, the fact that you could go back in time and have it still be the way it is in the future seems to unreal for me. If one was to go back in time how could he prove it without just being called "crazy or another "mad scientist", only way is with video proof and who’s to say the time warp would not mess with the video because of the changes in time? The whole idea of a time warp just seems unlikely to me.
http://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/everyday-myths/time-travel3.htm This site tells you how far away the possible wormholes are and how even if they were real time travel devices it would be virtually impossible to reach them in our lifetime.
After watching the video and reading the page on wormholes and time warps i go with my original thought that the idea of a time warp is impossible. In my thoughts it will never happen. But even though i strongly believe that, science has always surprised me so i would not be too shocked if we discovered how to use these wormholes as time warps.

  16. The concept of time travel is cool and all, but just not possible. The video was neat showing how it could work, but time travel simply is not reality, just a thing we think would be cool, but know never will be, because of the fact that it is impossible.
I found another example of a paradox and that being the grandfather paradox...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandfather_paradox...this states that if you were to go back in time and kill your grandfather, then you would never BE. Then how would you go back in time, some weird stuff.
Time travel does not exist has never existed and will never exist, just because you cannot do it. The show LOST is sort of an example of this concept, when it goes backward, forward and sometimes sideways in time. Very confusing, but at the same time very cool and it makes you think.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i thought that the videos were pretty cool, i like that they showed plausible ways, with more seemingly realistic outcomes(a difference of 8 minutes, not of 1000 years) for a paradox i remembered seeing one in a movie called time cophttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timecop it said that the same matter could not occupy the same space at the same time, and in the movie a younger version of a man colides with his older self, and he like implodes/dessentagrates/explodes.
i think that time travel may be possible, but maybe not in the traditional sense of hanging out with dinasours, but i think we could reduce the effects of time, possibly by traveling around a black hole. i have heard theories about traveling at speeds near the speed of light before, but the closer you get, the more energry it takes to continue moving at that speed, so would have to have a super efficient engine, an extremely reliable power source, and a perfectly planned trajectory to avoid all possible obstacles(not just planets, asteroids, comets, we would also have to anticipate the gravity of planets, even the solar system) well it may be possible, i find it highly unlikely, and also i think it would just me a bad idea, it would lead to too many paradoxes. also if we only exist because of the series of events, starting at the begining of time, that have led to us, time travel would mess with some aspects of that, changing some things for better, others for worse, but i think it would be better not to try and mess with it, cause stuff isn't that bad right now

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1. I thought that it was a cool video, and I do think that time travel will be possible in the near future because i think opening a worm hole is possible with the help of string theory.
    2. An example of a very well known paradox is Schrodinger's Cat. Here is a link to the paradox explained http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci341236,00.html
    3. I think time travel is very possible. Weather it will be ready to be used in the next 10 years or sooner is a gamble. In my opinion the best way to prove that time travel is possible is first by proving string theory. Because as many physisits have said before is that if string theory is proven then it woul be possible to find and "slice open" the string which would create a worm hole that you could pass through and be teleported to a different location or a different time period.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The Concept of time travel, while fascinating, is mind bogolingly unrealistic. Though the video was shown a interesting light on it, the completely realistic side of me refuses to believe this concept.

Paradox. I had to google these, just keep that in mind. I found the Accuracy paradox The accuracy paradox for predictive analytics states that predictive models with a given level of accuracy may have greater predictive power than models with higher accuracy. It may be better to avoid the accuracy metric in favor of other metrics such as precision and recall. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accuracy_paradox

To myself the idea of time travel seems like a large improbability, but I guess some parts of me believe that time travel maybe possible, just not anytime soon. When time travel does happen I fear we may find it just to dangerous, in my mind time travel maybe even to dangerous to experiment for fear of rupturing the space time continuum.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I do not think that any of these ideas are very reasonable. First, I don't think that they could even make a ship big enough to go the speed of light. And even then you would have to make it go the speed of light. Although these videos were pretty unrealistic I liked them. Just imagining certain ways that we could possibly time travel is kind of cool. The black hole idea is even more farfetched than the giant spaceship so I do not that this is possible.
An example of another paradox similar to the one in the video is called the grandfather paradox. http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/G/Grandfather_Paradox.html. This paradox states that if you travel back in time and kill your grandfather as a boy then he wouldn't have had your father and you wouldn't be born so you wouldn't be time traveling. This I think this disproves any chance of any time traveling back in time.
I do not think that traveling back in time is possible whatsoever. Although I think that maybe just maybe traveling to the future could be possible. The only problem is that you wouldn't be able to go back and you would be sacrificing your whole life just to go forward in time.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1) I thought that the video was good and interesting but not at all believable. I do not think that that could ever happen because with the way technology is improving now I think that it would already be done. If it is possible then I think it will be available in the near future.
    2) There is another paradox called Grandfather Paradox which is basically time travel. Another name is the Novikov self-consistency principle. A great modern example of this would be http://www.thetimetravelerswifemovie.com/dvd/index.html .
    3) I do not think this would ever happen because it would be impossible to come out of this portal normal in the same condition as you went in. The same thing with paradoxes the object that went in and went through this process would not come out the same. With it not coming out the same means that if it was true we may never know if it worked due to the disorders that the people who have been through it might have.
