Algebra II Honors Blog #2

Hey Guys,
So the last blog went well I thought and you all seemed fairly interested in it haha.

For this entry I would like you all to read this article on caffeine in energy drinks for Children and see what you think about some of the statistics it presents to audiences.

1.)     How much Caffeine do you think you get each day? Then look up the amount for the drink you consume and total for this entry.

2.)     The Article mentions obesity can result from some of these energy drinks. What about diet drinks? look up at least one ingredient that you do not readily recognize in a diet energy drink (you may have to research some if you don't have a can laying around) and comment on what you find out about the ingredient (please provide a link as well).

3.)     Look at the following site for information regarding the economic impact of obesity in america. How does Maine compare to some other regional states? and with the country?

26 comments:

  1. 1.) I don't really drink caffeine because the only drinks i drink are water, orange juice and milk.

2.) Energy drinks also have caffeine. An ingredient that I didn't recognize was evodiamine which is an herbal ingredient that can help you lose weight because it makes you not want to eat as much. This apparently might not be true thought because that was the effect that it had on rats and it might not have the same effect on humans.
    http://www.livestrong.com/article/212407-ingredients-in-diet-drinks/

3.) Maine doesn't spend nearly as much money as many of the other states. Our precentages are right up there with the rest of them though which is dissapointing. Our precentages are also very close to the country average too, but the money is still less.

  2. I don't drink soda or any of those energy drinks, but I like gatorade sometimes. Mostly I'll drink milk, water and apple juice though. Milk, water and apple juice combined have ZERO caffeine in them.

Diet drinks still have caffeine in them, another ingredient in a diet soda (specifically coke zero) is aspartame. This is an artificial sweetener type thing, it is a non-carbohydrate based product ---> no calories. However, it is possible to get aspartame poisoning, if you want to learn more, check out... http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-aspartame.htm
    and
    http://www.naturalnews.com/024302_aspartame_Splenda_diet_soda.html

Maine compared to the region, has a similar percent of people who are obese, spends more on the problem than Vermont and New Hampshire, but Massachusetts spends about 6 times as much as we do. Compared to the nation, Maine is eerily close to the nationwide average of percent of people who are obese, and we spend well under the nationally average for the problem.

  3. 1) I don't think I drink that much caffine. I drink mostly orange juice (live off it is more like it), and sometimes cranberry juice or water. At most I would have some tea (silver needle) so that brings my total at most to 15 mg.

2)So my ingredient is glucuronolactone, which is appearantly in Red Bull. So evidently it's a naturally occuring carbohydrate (disacharide) with the formula C6H8O6 used as a structural component for connective tissues, and there was some crazy conspiracy stuff about it causing brain tumors or something (which was, of course, not true). There's no "recommended dosage" or warnings by the FDA posted about this particualar carbohydrate.

    source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucuronolactone

3.Well, we're pretty cose to states like New Hampsire and New Jersey, though Massachusetts and Connecticut seem to be lower than us (in % of populations). I guess that makes us towards the higher end of the middle. % of medicare population seems to be about the same. In terms of a nation-wide basis, we're pretty much lined up in terms of percentages.

  4. 1) Personally, I rarely drink caffeine. The only things I ever drink are water, milk, orange juice or sleepy time tea. None of these have caffeine though, so I guess this brings me to 0 mg of caffeine.

    2) The ingredient I chose is Aspartame, and is a sugar substitute used in many diet energy drinks but most commonly in Red Bull. This artificial sweetener is made from aspartic acid, and is used as a calorie-free sweetener. Although this may taste good there are many dangers and side effects from this chemical. Many people have experienced blindness, severe slurring of speech, palpitations, peptic ulcers, and even epileptic seizures. According to one site drinking red bull has an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
So I'm not really a huge fan of energy drinks, although I never have been
    http://www.livestrong.com/article/303847-sugar-free-red-bull-side-effects/
    http://www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame-side-effects.html

    3) According to the table on the site you posted, Maine spends a very low amount of money compared to many other states in the US. Although our percentage is quite high which is pretty disappointing. We are pretty close in percentages to the nation-wide basis.

  5. 1.)i normally don't drink any caffeinated drinks, i normally stick with water, koolaid, or gatorade.

    2.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acesulfame_potassium
Ascesulfame potassium is a sugar replacer, it is paired with sucrelose(another artificial sweetener) one of the concerns people have with is if its safe, the fda says its safe, but they say this only by allowing all artificial sugars.

3.) i think Maine compares pretty averagely, but we also are one of the lower spending states. for the region, it was interesting to note that Massachusetts had a lower obesity percentage than us, but they spend more, which makes sense as they have a much larger population. i did think Vermont would have a lower obesity than it did, but i kind of guessed they wouldn't be spending a lot.

  6. 1. I do not drink much caffeine at all. This is because my parents do not approve of it and I do not find the drinks very appealing anyway. One drink that I do drink fairly regularly is green tea, which has about 25 milligrams per 8 ounce cup.

    2. After researching diet energy drinks I learned some things I did not know before. I had thought that diet energy drinks just had less sugar than other energy drinks but I was wrong. Some diet energy drinks actually have ingredients that decreases your appetite, or try to raise your metabolic rate to burn more calories. Evodiamine is one such ingredient that may help someone lose weight by decreasing their appetite. This ingredient is mentioned on the website http://www.livestrong.com/article/212407-ingredients-in-diet-drinks/.

    3. Obesity and people being over weight have cost the United States a large amount of money over the years through mainly health care. Maine compared to some of the states around it does not spend as much money on health care. This is the same with New Hampshire, but Massachusetts spends much more. Maine compared to the whole country also spends much less money. This could be the case because of many reasons, including education and eating habits although this is hard to compare.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1.) I do not drink much caffeine myself. If I ever do it is a soda at a party or when I go to a restaurant. I sometimes get an energy drink but never more than one in two months or more months. In Coke though, there is 35 milligrams of caffeine in 12 ounces.

2.) Diet Mountain Dew has 55 milligrams of caffeine for every 12 ounces! http://www.energyfiend.com/the-caffeine-database That's more than regular Coke! An ingredient that I do not recognize in Diet Mountain Dew is Aspartame. Aspartame is also known as "Equal" which is a fake sugar that was mistakenly invented. http://aspartame.mercola.com/ According to this artticle Aspartame can result in seizures and even death.

3.) Maine compared to other states in the region is sort of high. New Hampshire and Vermont both have less money being spent on obese people. Massachussetts on the other hand is quite a bit higher, and I think that is due to the more urban areas. Maine compared to the rest of the country though, is quite a bit lower and that is a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1. I don't usually drink energy drinks or any caffeinated beverages. What I do drink is water, milk, orange juice, and tea. The tea would probably contain about 40 mg of caffeine. Which brings me to a total of 40 mg of caffeine per a day.

    2. L-Carnitine is an ingredient in the Diet ROCKSTAR energy drink. L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. So L-carnitine basically allows the body to burn more fat, save more glycogen, and ultimately boost stamina and endurance. Studies show that there are no harmful side effects and that L-carnitine is a safe and effective means of enhancing fat metabolism.
    http://www.vanderbilt.edu/ans/psychology/health_psychology/l-carni.htm#WHAT IS L-CARNITINE?

    3. Maine spends a similar amount of money regarding obesity as our neighboring states such as New Hampshire and Vermont. But Massachusetts spends a excessive amount of more money on obesity than Maine does. As a nation, Maine is considerably close to the other states with our population of obesity but our spending is not nearly as close to the other states.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1.)I do not drink that much caffeine on a daily basis however occasionally I have some coffee or a soda.
2.) One ingredient I didn't recognize in an energy drink was Niacinamide. It is a water soluble vitatmin in Rockstar energy drink.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotinamide
3.) Maine spends much less money relating to obesity than other states, however our percentages stack up about the same with the rest of the country.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1. I don't drink that much energy drinks
, only water, milk, and juice. Sometimes I drink soda that generally has 35 mg of caffeine in a can.

    2. An ingredient that I don't recognize in diet drinks is Aspartame. It's a substitute for sugar and is made from something called aspartic acid. It doesn't have any calories in it. Even though it tastes sweet, it can cause serious health issues like death, blindness, seizures, and more. It also causes a risk for heart problems. This fact definitely makes me want to stay away from these types of drinks.

    3. Maine doesn't spend nearly as much money dealing with obesity compared to other states in the country. We have similar percentage of obese people but we spend less money. Our percentages are actually pretty close to the national average too, which is totally surprising to me.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1. I try to stay clear of energy drinks, because I know that they aren't good for you.

    2. The aspartic acid in these drinks is extremely unhealthy for you and can cause issues such as seizures and blindness, something that is clearly not a good thing. The heart also doesn't react well with this acid, and if it isn't good for the heart I can't imagine what it can be good for. I definitely don't want any of that acid in my body.

    3. Maine is one of the more obese states in the country. We don't spend many of our funds on obesity and Physical Education isn't as emphasized now as it used to be. Our obesity levels are close to the national average, which is still high but surprising considering the amount of money we spend on obesity.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1. I probably drink way too much caffeine. I don't really like sodas that much, but I drink a lot of coffee and red bull. In a regular coffee at Dunkin Donuts', there are about 206 mg of caffeine in a 16 ounce drink. Red bull is about 8.4 mg of caffeine in an 8.4 ounce can.

    2. One ingredient that I didn't recognize in sugar free red bull is taurine. Taurine is an organic acid, and is a major constituent of bile found in many animals and humans. Taurine is used in a lot of other energy drinks other than red bull also, come containing 1000 mg per serving. There have been no documented reports of taurine having positive or negative health effects through consumption, but it still sounds pretty gross.

    3. Health problems related to obesity has had a major effect on the US health care system. Some expenses that relate to obesity are the costs for preventive, diagnostic and treatment services, and mortality costs. In 1998, $78.5 billion was spent on costs attributed to overweight or obese people. And obesity is only getting worse in our country. Maine seems to be pretty average for obesity percentage, maybe a little less than some places such as Alaska or Washington D.C. However, we do spend a considerable less amount of money on medical expenses attributed to obesity.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1. We don't usually keep soda in my house so I usually stick with water or juice. I do drink tea though which has about 10 mg of caffeine per bag. I'd say my intake of caffeine is pretty low.

    2. One ingredient I had not noticed before was Potassium Benzoate. It is used as a food preservative which prevents the growth of mold, yeast, and some bacteria. It is most commonly seen in soft drinks, citrus juices, and sparkling beverages. In the UK it is recommended that children do not consume a lot of this ingredient seeing how it is unhealthy. Basically they're stating that children should not drink much soda or carbonated drinks.
    ------http://www.examiner.com/alternative-medicine-in-detroit/potassium-benzoate-hazards------

    3. When comparing ourselves with the national average, Maine is pretty much in the middle for percentages of people who are obese. However, we're a small state so that means that areas such as New York who's average is .1 below us, have MORE obese people because of their higher population. The amount of money we spend on this kind of stuff is relatively low compared to the rest of the country, which is definitely a good thing. It seems as though the other states that reside in the New England area, spend a smaller amount of money compared to Western and Southern states. (In millions) Maine: $357 - New Hampshire: $302 - Connecticut: $856. Massachusetts is bringing us down, spending almost 2 billion dollars on obesity. Tsk tsk.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 1. I don't really drink very much caffeine because i mostly just drink water, milk, juice, and tea and the tea that i have doesn't contain any caffeine.

    2. One ingredient that i didn't recognize was Nicotinamide. Nicotinamide is a water-soluble vitamin. In doses of more than 3g a day, it may be toxic to your liver.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotinamide

    3. Maine is right about in the middle compared to most states, as far as the percentage of obesity goes, but it spends a lot less money on obesity related costs than many of the other states.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't drink energy drinks and very rarely, drink sodas, I drink milk most of the time, orage juice sometimes and juice such as capri sun with my lunch, sometimes I have some of my dad's coffe but that is rare as well. So most of the time I have no caffine at all.
One type of ingredient in diet drinks thay=t is bad for you is Aspartame, which can cause many things including blindness, seizers, and other symptoms go to http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/symptoms.htm, to read more.
Alot of the numbers for Maine seemed, low, except for the percentages. Maine had a higher percentage of medicare users, the same medicaid and about the same number for obesity. Some of Maine's lower numbers might be due to a lower population or income, prohibiting less money for energy drinks. That explains why Maine has such a low amount of money spent.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. I don't think that I consume that much caffeine. Maybe some from chocolate and other foods that include caffeine. I don't drink energy drinks, never have, and I don't drink tea/coffee on a regular basis.

    2. An ingredient I found in the Monster Absolutely Zero energy drink (which has zero calories and zero sugar), was sucralose, commonly known as splenda. Splenda is not sugar, it is 600 times sweeter than sugar, and is claimed to be safe for human consumption on this website: http://www.sucralose.org/questions/default.asp It was discovered in the 70's when scientists were adjusting the structure of regular sugar to make it sweeter. Sucralose doesn't have any calories which allows Monster Absolutely Zero to be sugar free.

    3. Compared to other states, Maine fell on the lesser side of the middle point. Taking into consideration that Maine has a much lower population than the majority of the other states. As for relating to the country, the populations are pretty much matched up. Maine falls pretty much right in the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1. I drink soda a lot but its diet 99% of the time, so i dont know if that effects my caffiene intake a lot. I also drink coffee most mornings but ill only have an energy drink i couple times a year, i know its bad but i guess thats why i'm short.
    2. http://www.drsirestoreenergy.com/restore.php this is an energy drink for diabetics like me, apposed to say red bull or monster this energy drink, even though its diet, has no caffeine, very much unlike sugar energy drinks and no stimulants even like sugar free energy drinks usually have, i thought that that was unique.
    3. Compared to the bordering states maine had a higher percentage of its population fall under the obesity category but compared to the rest of the country were almost smack dab in the middle with only .1% less of the countries average, so pretty much just like everything else Maine is average.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1) I dont drink energy drinks or coffee, I usually drink milk, or a few different kinds of juices throughout the day.
    2) An ingredient that i wasnt aware of that is in diet drinks is Acesulfame K. Some of its benefits are: It helps reduce calories, it has an excellent shelf life, it tastes sweet and clean, and it doesnt promote tooth decay. http://www.caloriecontrol.org/sweeteners-and-lite/sugar-substitutes/acesulfame-k
    3) As for Maine compared to the states in this region, Maine is just about equal in all aspects. As for the country Maine is about equal just like the region.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1) I Don't normally drink caffeine products except for maybe Tea, which is normally organic. Besides that I mainly drink water and juice.
    2) Acesulfame K is a ingredient in diet soda that cuts down on the calories and acts as a sweetener.
    3) Maine is shockingly one of largest in our region and while many other states out with us in the nation we are still up there.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. I never drink energy drinks and I only drink soda on occasion. These few times when I do drink soda probably wouldn't increase my average caffeine per day.

    2. Maltodextrin, which is found in Diet Monster, is a starch. It is a white powder additive used to reduce the dryness of the drink. It is made from any starch such as; corn, or wheat. I had never heard of this before but then again I also don't recognize a lot of the ingredients put into energy drinks.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltodextrin

    3. Maine is about average in percentages of obesity. While there are some states with a higher percentage the same is also true the other way around. Maine does spend much less then most on millions of dollars sent on obesity.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1. I don't drink soda or carreinated drink. I drink mainly milk and gatorade.

    2. diet drinks still have some caffeine in it, one ingredient that is in diet rockstar that i didnt know about is Guarana
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guarana

    3. We are about in the middle of the obesity chart comparing to all of the states in the country, but it is pretty high for the northeast region.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1) I rarely drink caffeine every day; I may have it one or two days a week but never every day. I consume zero amount of caffeine everyday but when I do drink it I have a red bull mixed drink which has about 80 milligrams of caffeine.
    2) One ingredient that I do not recognize that is in normal energy drinks and not diet energy drinks is methylxanthines which is another word for caffeine. Caffeine seems to be one of the main reasons that kids are gaining weight so to take it out of the drink is smart because it makes kids take in fewer calories which makes them not gain as much weight. A website that shows this is http://www.screamingenergy.com/energy_drink_61.php
    3) Maine has the highest percentage of affected people with in regional states (New England). Maine is 0.1 percent lower than the average obesity population in the United States.

  23. Mr. Allen to be quite honest I do not drink cafinated substances. I am a strong believer that it is not good for my health.
The artificial sweeteners and other chemicals currently used in diet soda are very bad for your health.cited here on this website
    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/diet-soda/AN01732
Surprisingly maine is pretty much in the middle of the obesity chart with all the rest. But unfortunitly it is high for the northeast.

  25. 1. The only caffeine I drink is from coffee which is somewhere close to a medium cup so that means that every day I have school, I’ve taken around 60-100 mg of caffeine.

    2. Checking a can of an energy drink, I found that I didn’t recognize what ginkgo biloba was. At first, I thought it was great since it listed that it was believed to help with memory retention, concentration, people with Alzheimer’s while acting as an anti-depressant, but then I found out that an energy can’s worth is bad for our bodies because it helps in memory loss/concentration and depression.
    http://www.energyfiend.com/energy-drink-ingredients

    3. Looking at the chart, I can see that Maine was surprising to see. The average obesity of the total population was close to the percentage of Maine adults with obesity while we spend way less compared to other states. Mathematically, Maine also spends less than the average compared to other states such as New Jersey

  26. 1. I hardly ever drink any caffine drinks. If I ever do its not in coffee its in a soda. I hardly ever drink soda so my caffine intake is very low. I typically just drink water, maybe some fruit juices.

    2. Aspartame is almost in all diet drinks, including redbull, monster, jolt, etc. http://www.sweetpoison.com/

    3. Maine is actually high up on the charts with the highest percentage in New England! Maine spends the most on medicare too except for Connecticut. With the country Maine is right below average, and spends much less money on it.
