Japans Crisis and Radioactivity

Hey guys,
For this post I would first like you to read the following article on Japans current crisis involving one of its nuclear facilities after the recent Earthquake and Tsunami.
Then please watch the following video relating to radiation

1.)     What type of radiation do you think is being emitted from the plant in Japan?

2.)     What opinions have you heard about ongoing research and construction of nuclear plants? have you formed an opinion? If so please share what it is and why?

3.)     Research either 'three mile island' or 'Chernobyl' on Wikipedia and read about one. In what ways do you think that the one you researched is the same or different than the current crisis in japan?

  1. 1) I think that alpha radiation if what is being emitted from the plant in Japan.
    2) I have not heard anything about the construction or research of nuclear plants but I think that they should build something stronger to help protect these nuclear plants from being destroyed by both natural disaster human disasters.
    3) I researched the “three mile island” and in a way it is different than the crisis in Japan right now because this was caused by mechanical issues while the Japan crisis is cause by a natural disaster. Lastly the United States one was not as big of a deal because people didn’t know about it until a little while after it happened then the press attacked while in Japan the news is right on top of it.

  2. 1. I personally believe that the raidiation is alpha radiation that is being emitted.
    2. The ongoing research on these nuclear plants is exciting, and scary. Considering the nuclear waste that has to be disposed of. I have heard that a nuclear depository is under construction in Iowa, so that should ease some worries. However stronger defenses against the radiation from entering the air should be developed because it is so dangerous.
    3. The three mile island was also a case where radiation was emitted into the air in Pennsylvania. This disaster was caused by a technical problem with the equipment, while Japan's release of radiation was due to the 8.9 earthquake that hit them along with the tsunamis that destroyed the nuclear plants. That is the main difference between the two. However, it is similar in that it relased toxic radiation into the air.

  3. 1. The type of radiation being emitted is Gamma Radiation.
    2. I have heard of nothing of ongoing construction of power plants. So i have no opinion on the topic.

    3. I researched three mile island. I believe it is completely different from the situation in Japan. The three mile island was caused by human error, the Japan crisis is because of a natural disaster. The after effects of three mile island weren't devastating and the after effects of Japan will most likely be devastating. Along with Japans problem is more widespread.

  4. 1) I personally think that it is alpha radiation being emitted.

    2) I have not actually heard of anything on the topic of ongoing construction of nuclear power plants, but personally I think that the idea is pretty scary. The amount of radiation is very frightening and terrible for the human race and for the environment. If they do create more of these plants, they should at least be constructed better, with stronger materials and thicker barriers.

    3) I chose three mile island, which is different then the situation in Japan right now. Three mile island was the result of technical error, the human race caused it. The huge situation in Japan was caused by a natural disaster, an 8.9 earthquake which hit them accompanied by tsunamis that destroyed the plants. The only thing similar that I could find was the radiation that was emitted. In each issue there was tons of radiation emitted from the plants.

  5. 1. I belive that gamma rays are being produced because the other two types can be stopped by clothing or other object but gamma is stronger and more dangourse, they wouldn't be worrying about it if it was alpha or beta.
    2. After 3 mile island there was no more constructing of any new nuclear power plants. Overalll in my mind that is a good thing. It may not be a fossil fuel and it may be cheap for people to buy. But the constructing of the buildings and the decomissioning are very expensive. Along with that someone must keep any eye on the waste products for thousands of years untill it final is gone. It is more bad then good overall. I have heard about Obama and other officals thinking about using nuclear power as a source of energy because it is not a fossil fuel, but as you can tell from what I said above, I don't approve.
    3. In three mile island was different in a way, both had mechanical problems. In Japan the cooling systems broke down. In 3 mile island, 10s of thousand of gallons of radiactivity 'escaped and ran into a river.

  6. 1.) Gamma without a doubt.

2.) I did a research project on nuclear power in like 8th grade or something. I think most people just don't think about it; otherwise there'd be mass hysteria everywhere since there are a lot of plants. Personally, I am not in favor of it because 1) it is dangerous (obviously) and 2) it is very wasteful. A lot of things like brooms, coats, etc. that are used in plants become radioactive enough so that they could be dangerous, and the waste product produced by nuclear power is hazardous. Of course, in 20,000 years it'll all be okay, but in the mean time, I don't think dumping all that stuff in the middle of Nevada really solves anything. So until nuclear power becomes truly safe and "green," I will not support it.
3.)Chernobyl is similar in that they were both accidents, and released radioactive black smoke, I guess, but Japan's disaster was due to earthquakes while Chernobyl was because of testing and a faulty emergency shutdown.

  7. 1.) I believe that gamma radiation is being emitted from the nuclear power plants in Japan. Gamma radiation is capable of traveling through paper and glass, but is only stopped by lead or concrete. Due to this extensive length of travel, many food and water sources are becoming contaminated. Alpha or Beta radiation is not capable of traveling such a distance to such damage in Japan.

2.) I have heard nothing about ongoing construction or research of nuclear plants. I do know that nuclear power plants are efficient in the sense that they are not a fossil fuel. Although, they are a dangerous and unstable source of energy. I feel that the disadvantages out way the benefits so we should create safer nuclear plants before we use them to the extent of which we do.

3.) Three mile island and the Japanese nuclear plants are similar in that the release of dangerous radioactive material has caused various problems for the people near these facility. The three mile island accident was caused by technical issues whereas the Japanese nuclear power crisis was caused by a series of earthquakes and other natural disasters.

  8. 1.) I think the radiation from Japan is Gamma radiation.
2.) I have not heard any opinions about the build up of the nuclear plant in Japan, however I have heard that the radiation is not supposed to reach the United States. I think that the plant needs to be built up strong enough to not allow any radiation to be released.
3.) In the three mile island incident, radiation was also emitted however it was due to an equipment malfunction rather than a natural disaster such as and earthquake or a tsunami.

  9. 1. I think that gamma radiation is being emitted from the nuclear power plants in Japan. I believe this because gamma rays can pass through paper and glass while the other two types, alpha and beta, cannot. Also, if the nuclear power plants were emitting alpha or beta radiation, there wouldn't be such a concern with contamination, evacuation, etc.

    2. I haven't heard much about the research and construction of nuclear power plants, however, I do have an opinion. Clearly, nuclear power plants are not safe. The world has absolutely no control over natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. I believe that we need to take the focus on this research and construction and put effort into safer, healthier, energy alternatives.

    3. I read about Chernobyl and I found that it is unlike Japan because a nuclear power plant in Chernobyl exploded while Japan's nuclear power plant underwent damage due to a natural disaster. Also, Chernobyl and surrounding towns were evacuated within 2 days of the explosion while the Japanese government insists there is not need for an evacuation.

  10. 1. I think that the radiation that is being emitted is gamma. This is because I know that the radiation that is being emitted in Japan can not be stopped by clothing and just the human body, so it had to be gamma.

    2. So far I havn't heard of any research or contruction of nuclear plants. I feel like what the United States should do is try to prevent the spread of the radiation to other places in the world. That would be a way we could help, and then it wouldn't come over here as well. I feel like this should also be a lesson for the thinking of building more nuclear plants. What happened in Japan could happen anywhere, so we need to make sure we learn from this and stop making nuclear plants.

    3. Chernobyl wasn't like Japan's nuclear radiation becaue what happened in Chernobyl was that it exploded because of human error, while the crisis in Japan is due to a natural disaster. The two really can't even be compared in that sense. Also, in Japan they don't even want people to evacuate. They really don't see it as being too big of a deal. In Chernobyl they had people out of there in 2 days.

  11. 1. i believe that gamma radiation is the radiation effecting people. i also think that alpha and beta radiation are being given off, but the lose energy too quickly to effect much.

    2. i haven't heard too much about new nuclear reactors, but i do think that nuclear power should be used. it can be effective, but like everything, it has risk. as long as it is approached with care, it can be used effectively.

    3. i researched the three mile island incident. i do not think this should be compared to the situation in japan because one was caused b poor engineering and poor training. the other was caused by a huge earthquake and a tsunami, theres not much you can do to guard against those, except not be japan...but thats not an option for them.

    3.

  12. 1. I think it is gamma radiation because I've read that some workers have been burnt through their radiation suit and that there was potential leakage despite no evidence yet.
    2. I don't really know much about the research or the construction of nuclear plants, but all I know that most construction plans for the plants are on hiatus due to the issue of whether or not that an incident like in Japan could be fixed. My opinion is that the nuclear plants are great for creating energy BUT has high risks such as the events occurring in Japan.
    3. I've read about Chernobyl and I think that the Japan incident is nowhere near to the incident in Chernobyl. To start, Chernobyl incident began with an experiment that went wrong which caused radioactive material to disperse in the air and travel around the area. Whereas in Japan, it was started by a natural disaster which only damaged the reactor and created a hydrogen explosion that blew off some walls. Secondly, the first response to each nuclear plant was different. At first, firefighters didn't know it was a nuclear reactor rather than an electrical fire in Chernobyl whereas people in Japan knew what was happening and was dumping thousands of gallons of water onto their reactors. Then there's the fact that people around the reactors in Japan are lingering around the area while in Chernobyl, residents of nearby areas were evacuated.

  13. 1. I think that Gamma radiation is what’s being emitted from the plant in Japan.
    2. I have not heard any opinions about the nuclear plants. The only opinion I have heard is from my friends dad who was talking to me about how they should reconstruct them and fortify them to not allow what happened in Russia a couple centuries ago and what’s happening now happen again. I agree with that because we should not have nuclear plants emitting radiation, that is dangerous stuff and I think that we should take precautions.
    3. I chose three mile island. This is a completely different scenario then Japan is facing right now. What happened there was human error, which could have been prevented. whats happening in Japan is due to natural disaster and there’s nothing we can do about that. The only way these two are alike is in the fact that they are both an occurrence of radiation being emitted into the air.

  14. 1. I think gamma radiation is being emitted from the plant in Japan. I think this because it can't be stopped by clothes and such.

    2. I haven't heard much about ongoing construction of plants. However, I'm extremely against nuclear power plants. They're dangerous, for both the environment and people. I think that if nuclear power plants are going to be continued to be constructed, they should be built in an isolated area and more research should be put into how to make them more sturdy and prevent leakage.

    3. I researched three mile island. This is a lot different from the crisis in Japan because ti was caused my inadequate training and human error. However, I think that both situations should be taken just as seriously because they have the same amount of danger behind them.

  15. 1) I think that Gamma Radiation is is being emitted in Japan
    2) I haven't heard much about Japan nuclear power plant construction around me. But being the opinionated person I am, I clearly have a stand point on nuclear power plants. In Japan, a place that has gotten 2 tsunamis, I think it is unsafe to have nucleate power plants, what happens if another tsunami hits, rught after we rebuilt all these power plants? Then we are stuck in the same position
    3) i looked at three mile island and from what I saw they 2 situations are completely different! Japan is facing a crisis right no, not a accident caused by something people did.

  16. 1. In my opinion the radiation that is being emitted from the power plant in Japan are Gamma rays. My reasoning for this is because this is the most dangerous kind of radiation, which is why the Japanease government is so worried about the effects it will have on the people, water supply, and food supplies.
    2. I haven't read or heard anything about research for power plants, but I think they should focus on how to create a building that would make it impossible for any radiation to get out.
    3. I researched the Three Mile Island accident. This incident was a meltdown of a nuclear power plant. This incident was caused by a stuck-open pilot-operated relief valve. When this was stuck open it let large amounts of nuclear coolant to escape. I think this incident and the one in Japan are completely different. The reason is because the Three Mile Island incident was caused by a man operated relief valve, where as the incident in Japan was caused by an earthquake. Also, the effects of radiation for the Three Mile Island incident was around 5 miles, where as in Japan the warning is for over a 100 mile radius.

  17. 1.) I think that the radiation being emitted is Gamma radiation. This is because there are reports of workers getting burns even while wearing suits. Gamma rays travel through clothing and are blocked slightly by the skin.

2.) We've talked about the construction of nuclear plants in History class once or twice and they've turned out to be pretty interesting discussions. The U.S has experimented with nuclear power for a while and at one point, our country wanted to make some well populated areas in Maine, dumps for nuclear waste. I believe nuclear power could become a very efficient and clean way to eliminate gas dependance altogether. However, we must find a way to stop radiation that could be harmful to both ourselves and our environment before we even think of doing that.

3.) I researched Chernobyl in what is now considered Ukraine. This is quite similar to the crisis in Japan when we consider what triggered the initial problem. Both disasters were caused by a power outage and the failing of a back-up system. However, in Chernobyl, this caused a reactor vessel to rupture and explode. A plume of radioactive smoke was then emitted from the plant.
In Japan, the cooling systems failed after the power went out (from an earthquake) which caused the nuclear reactors to begin to overheat while exposing their fuel rods. Japan's government was preventing this overheating by using various tactics, yet there was still a lot of turmoil and danger.
I think that even though these events were quite different, any type of nuclear disaster that harms a large amount of people should be taken with the same amount of seriousness.

  18. 1. Gamma radiation is being emitted from the damaged power plant in Japan. These rays can travel much longer distances and do not penetrate the human skin.

    2. I believe we need to find an alternative way to make energy for the future when we no longer have the use of fossil fuels. I think that nuclear plants are a very good way to create the energy needed. There is danger with these plants is the chance they could be destroyed and emit radiation similar to the situation in Japan. To prevent this from happening we need to find a way to make these nuclear power plants almost indestructible.

    3. Chernobyl was similar but also somewhat different to the incident in Japan. Japan was caused by and Earthquake, while Chernobyl was cause because of faulty testing. The event at Chernobyl was huge and evacuated all the civilians. The situation in Japan is different and they cannot evacuated people the same way they did for Chernobyl. They were similar to one another with what happened to the plants, both caused major radiation problems in that area.

  19. 1. I think that the radiation being emitted is Gamma radiation. There are many reports of injuries from workers. These gamma rays travel long distances and can travel through clothing.

    2. We definitely need to find an alternative way to get clean energy that is less expensive too. Fossil fuels contribute to climate change and nuclear power can obviously be extremely dangerous. It will only get worse.

    3. I looked up the three mile island accident, which was a terrible nuclear powerplant meltdown. This is very different than the Japan incident because that one wasn't related to human error. Either way, both are horrible things that clearly show us the huge consequences of nuclear power.

  20. 1.) I think it is Alpha radiation

2.) I havn't really heard much about formation and construction of the nuclear power plants except from my dad, he works at a navy shipyard with nuclear stuff and he said that japan was backed up for the earthquake but the tsunami overloaded and caused the explosion.

3.)I researched Chernobyl and i dont think it is the same thing because the nuclear explosions were caused from a natural disaster and not human mistake. Chernobyl might not have occured if the power outage didnt start in the first place. There isn't much you can do to stop an earthquake and tsunami from hitting the island though.

  21. 1) Radioactive Iodine is being omitted from the plants in Japan and it is too much for any human being to be exposed to. So much in fact that the U.S. has vowed to not accept produce from the island country because of its crisis.
    2) I have not really heard enough about ongoing research on Nuclear plants, all I know is that nuclear energy is very dangerous but it can be used over a long period of time which is helpful to the economy because the expenses would be lower.
    3) The incident at Chernobyl was totally different to this issue. In Chernobyl, the plant actually was exploded by man (by mistake) where as in Japan, the crisis was caused by an earthquake and a tsunami.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1) I Believe it is Alpha Radiation

    2) I have not heard any opinions on this subject and I have no opinions on this subject besides nuclear stuff is dangerous

    3) these incidents are not at all related because the nuclear plant in Chernobyl was exploded, an accident caused by a man, and in japan this incident was caused by a tsunami which was caused by a earthquake
